It was a morning like no other. I have done careful research for months and have finally decided. "Today is the day Jonathan", I said to myself. I was as giddy as a five year old who could not wait for Christmas morning to open up the presents. This was my morning. No one else’s. This was the morning I would go and purchase my Breitling Super Ocean diver's watch.
Do you want to know why I decided on the Superocean? Well, it is simple. It is because of the case-back. "The case-back?" you ask. Yip, the case-back. Now you have to understand that the Breitling brand is somewhat out of my league from a financial point of view. Starting at round about $1,800 it is certainly an expensive watch by my standards. I think my 'financial demographic' would typically be more inclined towards the Seiko Kinetic 200 meter dive watch, which is in fact a really nice watch. However, the moment I laid my eyes on that perfectly crafted case-back I knew I was going to eat less for the next few months. And that I did. I saved up so that I did not have to make credit. Making credit to buy the Breitling Superocean would have been like cheating at a poker game to win. It just would not have been right.
Finally the day arrived when my very expensive gift to myself would arrive. I purchased the watch online and literally tracked my shipping order every single day. It only took three days for it to arrive at my doorstep. "Delivery for Jonathan Bryce from Amazon.com" the delivery person said as I opened the door. I was ecstatic. The thing I wanted most has finally arrived at my doorstep. My two and a half year old son, Dylan, was standing next to me at that point and was just excited as his daddy, though not really sure why. After I thanked the delivery person I immediately went to the living room to open up my treasure. I enjoyed second of it. The packaging was beautiful and when I finally saw the 'king of the seas' right there in my hands it was everything and more I expected. After glancing for one last time at that beautiful case-back I slipped her around my wrist. Man, what an awesome feeling.
I have to say, 6 months later down the line, it is still a treat for me to give directions or tell a story excitingly with my hands. I really enjoy showing off my watch. I will probably never own more than watch at any given time, and I will not buy any other watch if I do not have to.
